HARRISONBURG — For years, local evangelist Steve Wingfield watched Memorial Day come and go with little acknowledgement for those the day was set aside to remember.
Seven years ago, he stepped up to fill the void. He wanted to remember those who gave their lives fighting for the country and those who continue to fight for America’s freedoms.
“They are the modern-day heroes,” said Jessica Taylor, the ministry staff specialist for the Steve Wingfield Evangelistic Association. “Our freedoms are possible because of the sacrifices they made.”
The annual Memorial Day Community Celebration at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds is set for May 27. The event, which is free to attend, begins at 4 p.m. Food will be available for purchase.
The event typically attracts more than 5,000 people, and one of the big draws each year is the Christian music lineup.
Bridgewater native Jessica Crawford, who serves as the worship arts director for Fountain of Life Church in Burlington, N. J., plans to take the stage.
Additionally, The Brandenberger Family, Christian rock group the Poland Band and country and folk singer John Schmid plan to perform.
The event will also feature a classic car show and entertainment for children.
For the second year in a row, Wingfield is hosting a Memorial Day Youth Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. May 26 at the fairgrounds.
The event will feature youth groups from the Shenandoah Valley coming together to worship.
