Josh McCoy joins The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham as new director of philanthropic services

The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham welcomes Josh McCoy in the new role of director of philanthropic services.

McCoy brings more than 20 years of development experience, including senior leadership roles with fundraising and advancement in higher education and the nonprofit sector across the United States and internationally.

He will lead and grow the foundation’s fundraising and donor stewardship efforts, providing key oversight, leadership, and strategy.

TCFHR manages more than 350 funds and approximately $117 million in charitable assets for the benefit of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. In 2025, generous donors gave a record $9.8 million in gifts and grants to nonprofit organizations.

The foundation’s rapid growth over the past several years has posed unique but welcome challenges, said Executive Director Revlan Hill.

“Josh will strengthen and expand our capacities to serve our fundholders, our professional partners, and this community at a time when, thanks to many generous hearts, we are growing faster than ever,” she said. “He brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of development, including major gifts and planned giving, while also prioritizing one-on-one relationship-building and creative collaboration for the greatest donor impact and community benefit. I’m looking forward to working in partnership with Josh as we continue our mission here in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.”

Most recently, McCoy served as director of advancement at St. Anne’s-Belfield School and as vice president of philanthropy for The Galapagos Conservancy. He has held associate/assistant vice president positions at University of El Paso, Mary Baldwin University, and University of Oregon.

A Florida State University graduate, McCoy began his career as an annual giving development officer for the FSU Foundation, eventually serving as director of development for the college of social sciences.

McCoy currently serves on the board of trustees of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton and has volunteered with the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro (SAW) Housing Working Group, the Housing Emergency Relief Organization of Waynesboro, Caravanserai Music, and the Heifetz International Music Institute. He and his wife regularly attend arts performances at Forbes Center for the Performing Arts on the James Madison University campus in Harrisonburg.
