Chamber Leadership Program Enter 40th Year
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce has been training future leaders since its inception in 1916, but formalized its role in community leadership training in 1979 when the Community Leadership Program (CLP) was started. In 2012, the program was re-named Leadership Harrisonburg-Rockingham (LHR) to reflect the geographic connection to the community. LHR was “designed to identify citizens who exhibited leadership potential and to broaden their knowledge of the community’s history, current issues and future outlook….combining community awareness with leadership training and skills development”.
LHR is a nine month program, with sessions one day each month, with specific focus on various sectors of the community, interwoven with leadership skills components. Topics include: local history and government, workplace communications, education, arts and entertainment, and the economy. A class project, a way of giving back to the community, is also a requirement.
Robin Ruleman, a 2017/18 LHR graduate and now co-Chair of the LHR Steering Committee, reflecting on her time in the program, says “my favorite aspect of the class was learning how so much of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County are connected through education, the arts, manufacturing, state and local government, and non-profits”. The program’s Steering Committee is composed of previous class members, insuring the program stays fresh and relevant.
Since 1979, over 1,000 community leaders has gone through the LHR program. The 2019/2020 class will be selected in early August.
