HARRISONBURG — Brothers Craft Brewing rescheduled the fourth annual Coffee Fest to October as a precaution against Hurricane Florence in September.
The brewery was also planning to host its first fall festival in October, so the two events were fused together to create Fall Coffee Fest 2018.
“It felt natural to combine the two together,” said Josh Harold, taproom manager at the North Main Street brewery.
On Saturday, the brewery will pour coffee-infused and seasonal fall beers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festival will also include live music, food trucks and vendors.
The brewery will infuse coffee from Blue Elk Coffee Co. in Elkton into five different beers: Daylight Cravings, Coconut Coffee Resolute infusion, A Whole Latte Love infusion and Coffee Blonde Ale and Coffee IPA pilot batches.
“Last year, we got our coffee from a larger coffee roaster in Richmond,” Harold said. “When we went to do our Daylight Cravings this year, we wanted to go back to locally sourcing our coffee beans. It was a natural fit for their coffee beans in our beer.”
Daylight Cravings is a dark, breakfast-style stout with coffee and maple syrup. A Whole Latte Love is a new milk stout that was brewed as a one-off.
“To spice things up a little bit, I will be creating an infusion of it with Blue Elk coffee beans, cinnamon, dark cacao nibs and nutmeg to create a cappuccino effort,” Harold said.
Brothers Craft is infusing coffee into the popular Coconut Resolute beer, a bourbon barrel-aged Russian Imperial stout. The brewery creates different variants of Resolute each year.
The Coconut Resolute was a customer favorite in 2015, so the brewers decided to bring it back again and add coffee.
When creating the coffee beers for the event, Harold said, the brewers look to pair a variety of beer styles with coffee, from IPAs to ales to milk stouts.
“We looked toward beers that we already infused with coffee,” he said. “A couple of these beers we brewed with coffee in mind.”
In addition to the coffee beers, Brothers will also have special fall- inspired beers on tap, including the Blonde Betty.
“Blonde Betty is a different twist on a fall spiced beer,” Harold said. “We collaborated with Bold Rock Hard Cider using their fresh-pressed apple juice. … It tastes like apple pie.”
The Coffee IPA and Coffee Blonde Ale are part of Brothers’ pilot series that were brewed in very small batches. Harold said the pilot system is used for recipe development, experimental beers and special beers for festivals and events.
Candied Pecan Drunken Mornings is a special fall twist on Brothers’ Drunken Mornings, which is regularly released in the spring with Daylight Cravings.
Apple Brandy Bourbon Barrel- Aged Softly Spoken and Fairgrounds Fall Ale, a pumpkin beer, are Brothers’ other fall- inspired beers. A variant of Fairgrounds infused with Blue Elk’s coffee will be available at the festival.
Other brews available include Lil’ Hellion, Farmers Market, Fest Bier, Gosecolada and Great Outdoors.
There will be a beer for everyone’s taste preferences.
“People tend to drink porters and stouts in the fall, so we’ll be pulling out our porters and stouts like Resolute,” he said. “In total, we’ll have about 16 taps pouring, and we’ll also have a few sours and lighter beers for people who don’t like heavy beer.”
Black Sheep Coffee, Crazy Fox Coffee Roasting Co., Snowing in Space and Greenberry’s will serve regular coffee at the festival. Breakfast will be available by Mr. J’s Bagel & Deli starting at 10 a.m., and Flavor Savor BBQ will serve lunch.
Brent Funkhouser, a local musician, will perform starting at 1 p.m., and the three- piece band Delaplane will play starting at 3:30 p.m.
Vendors will set up booths for the fall festival part of the event. The Fall Coffee Fest is a family-friendly event. Activities include a pumpkin carving station and a campfire with a s’mores building station.
Friendly City Pedicab will be available to shuttle guests between the brewery and the Skeleton Festival taking place at the Turner Pavilion.
