Bridgewater, VA – Bluestone Vineyard will host a 10-day long food drive for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in collaboration with an employee ugly Christmas sweater contest. From Friday, November 26 through Sunday, December 5, we are asking patrons to bring in non-perishable food items to vote for their favorite ugly Christmas sweater.  The winner of the contest will be determined by who has the most donated items placed in front of their picture that is set up in the Tasting Room.

“We are really excited to add something new to our event calendar this year that involves both our staff and the local community. It was really fun creating a sweater and knowing the food drive will help people in our community that are in need have access to food during the holiday season,” said Tasting Room Manager, Ranee Bartley.

The contest will kick off on Black Friday, include Small Business Saturday on November 27, and will conclude on Sunday, December 5. Our goal for this food drive is to collect 500 pounds of food that will be donated to the Shenandoah Valley branch that serves approximately 33,290 people each month.

All participating employees will be wearing their ugly sweaters at the 10th annual Weihnachtsmarkt happening Saturday, December 4th from 11 am – 5 pm outside around the grounds of Bluestone’s Tasting Room and the vineyards. The Weihnachtsmarkt is a festive-filled day featuring over 25 local craft vendors, two German-themed food trucks, The Bavarian Chef and Brats and More, and our Glühwein made from the wine Crooked and Weedy and mulling spices. It is a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping, enjoy some mulled wine, and drop off food items.

“We were looking to do something new and exciting this year revolving around our 10th annual Weihnachtsmarkt so we thought of an ugly Christmas sweater contest but we wanted it to be more than just a bunch of likes on social media. Then we thought there is nothing like getting in the holiday spirit by donating to the local community. With that said, we would greatly appreciate anyone who is kind enough to donate items for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank,” said Marketing Coordinator, Emily Eby.

According to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the most desirable items include proteins such as canned tuna, salmon or chicken, peanut butter, beans, and canned nuts. Dairy items such as canned, evaporated, or powdered milk are in high demand. Fruits and vegetables including 100% juice in boxes and cans, low- or no-sodium canned vegetables, and fruits in light syrup or fruit juice. Boxed pasta, rice, cereal, canned soups and stews, and macaroni and cheese are some other items that are always appreciated.
