The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce Announces Policy Priorities
Transportation, Affordable Housing and Childcare are key to workforce issues

Harrisonburg, VA – October 4, 2021 – The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has officially adopted, as immediate policy priorities, the areas of Transportation, Affordable Housing and Childcare. These three issues, through the Chamber Public Policy Committee, have been identified as key workforce concerns and will allow the organization to focus more intently on bringing business solutions to the table.

“The Chamber is committed to working and solving these challenging issues,” said Chris Quinn, President & CEO of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. “Many organizations have come to the same conclusion as we have and we look forward to having a community dialogue.”

Over the past several months, the Chamber Public Policy Committee has been studying these issues while speaking with experts in the field. “As we dove deeper into each area, it was clear that they were all inter-related, and that every industry has its own unique challenges,” said Quinton Callahan, an attorney at Clark & Bradshaw as well as Vice-Chair of Community Relations for the Chamber. “Our Policy Committee felt that with workforce being such a major focus across the region, it made sense that Transportation, Affordable Housing and Childcare receive special attention from the business community.”

“Making a statement that the Chamber is laser-focused on these issues is important for the community to see and hear,” said Dr. Melissa Lubin, Dean of JMU’s School of Professional & Continuing Education and Chair of the Chamber. “We, along with the entire business community, want to roll up our sleeves and be at the table to help develop solutions.”

The Chamber has already begun efforts to work with various organizations, as well as governmental entities, to study the issues and bring others into the conversation.
