JMU Students Collect Items For Food Drive

HARRISONBURG — For the last few weeks, Mac Richard and his fellow students in James Madison University’s College of Business collected food for the needy.
In their eighth year collecting, the students gathered more 6,500 items to go to the Harrisonburg Salvation Army.
“It feels good,” said Richard, a 20-year-old junior accounting major from Fairfax. “It’s important to help people in need.”
On Wednesday, a group of public safety personnel from the Harrisonburg area helped take the roughly 10,000 pounds of food out of Zane Showker Hall and load into a truck.
Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson brought about a dozen deputies to help.
“The JMU kids always do an amazing job,” Hutcheson said. “It’s the least we can do to help.”
The items donated will go toward the total raised by the Brent Berry Food Drive.
James “Bucky” Berry and his 19-year-old son, Brent, started the drive about a decade ago because food pantries helped the older Berry when he was a child.
The father said more and more people need assistance.
“The need isn’t going away,” Berry said.
Capt. John Blevins of the Harrisonburg Salvation Army said between 150 to 200 people seek food from his pantry each week.
He said the 6,500 donated items will help put food on the table for hundreds of people this winter.
“This is going to help our pantry for months and months,” said Blevins, adding that donations are always accepted.
Daphyne Thomas, a JMU business professor, said she’s proud of the students’ work. She said the women’s lacrosse team stepped up big for the second year in row by collecting hundreds of items.
It’s exciting, she said, to see students help people in need.
“This affirms why you teach,” she said. “You teach with hope they will become positive contributors to the community.”
In addition to the College of Business food drive, JMU held a campus wide collection with drop-off points at 14 locations.
Food for that drive is being collected through today and will later be donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona.
