Funds raised during annual June event benefit Massanutten Regional Library and WVPT Public Media

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Shirley’s summer of 2018 is one for the books. Literally.

In June, Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Company of Harrisonburg pledged 100% of sales during Shirley’s annual birthday celebration to Massanutten Regional Library and WVPT Public Media. After the day concluded, the store raised a grand total of $1,800 to be split between the two organizations.

“WVPT Public Media and the Massanutten Regional Library are near and dear to our family’s hearts,” said Lisa Roeschley, Shirley’s Harrisonburg store co-owner. “It is our honor to present valuable funds to support the amazing reading and literacy programs both organizations share with the Harrisonburg community.”

Massanutten Regional Library provides a variety of free services to surrounding counties. For example, the library offers an after-school program during the school year for children in kindergarten to fifth grade and story time at the library year-round. WVPT Public Media is an accessible educational resource in the region. WVPT Public Media provides local shows and PBS shows, including PBS Kids. WVPT also has literacy programs, science-related family events, morale-building awards projects, and more.

Funds raised for local reading and literacy organizations during this year’s birthday celebration total more than $21,000 across all seven Shirley’s stores in Ohio, Virginia, and Indiana.

Shirley’s commitment to reading and literacy programs extends beyond the annual birthday event. During National Reading Month in March, Shirley’s shares free bags of its hand created gourmet popcorn with readers of all ages who complete at least six hours of reading. Between Shirley’s National Reading Month promotion and the birthday celebrations at each of the Shirley’s stores, the brand has collectively given more than $120,000 in cash and product donations to local reading and literacy causes since 2014.
