The focus of today’s libraries goes beyond books. Librarians are leaders in their communities – helping people of any age find what they need to help improve their quality of life. This September, Massanutten Regional Library is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-up Month, an initiative to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

“Libraries build a foundation for children’s future success starting from the earliest stages of development,” says Lois Jones, Library Director. “Librarians play a key role in helping children develop the basic tools for school readiness.”

At Massanutten Regional Library, young children enjoy storytimes, which combine story, song, rhythm, colors and more to lay the groundwork for early literacy. For older students, MRL offers a wide-range of resources, including high-interest reading, online resources, internet access, as well as a staff of highly-trained professionals dedicated to helping patrons find the information they need.

“Our library provides access and programs for students of all ages,” says Denise Munro, Youth Services Coordinator. “For preschool-age children, we offer early literacy resources and storytimes to encourage school readiness; for older children and teens, we offer weekly STEAM-based programming that supplements in-school learning. Plus, there are programs throughout the year, online databases, downloadable ebooks, audiobooks and magazines, and much more. There’s really something for everyone, and it’s all free with an MRL library card.”

While Library Card Sign-up Month focuses on the value of libraries in the lives of students, a
library card from Massanutten Regional Library is a great resource for everyone. An MRL
library card is free to anyone who lives, works or attends school in the city of Harrisonburg, or
Rockingham or Page Counties. In addition, residents of counties and cities contiguous to
Harrisonburg, Rockingham and Page are also eligible for a free MRL library cards.
