HARRISONBURG— Get those trash bags ready; the 22nd annual Blacks Run and Downtown Clean Up Day is coming up.
Each spring, hundreds of people gather to help clean up the heavily polluted waterway and downtown properties.
Registration opened Monday for people to sign up to volunteer.
The Blacks Run and Downtown Clean Up Day will take place April 13. To register, visit www.cleanstream.org.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality declared Blacks Run, along with many of the waterways in the Shenandoah River Watershed, impaired because of the presence of E. coli and fecal matter.
Blacks Run, which is almost 9 miles long, starts in the city and runs south, where it flows into Cooks Creek.
Last April, about 600 volunteers picked up more than 4 tons of refuse during the event, according to a city press release.
In the past four years, more than 2,000 people have volunteered and picked up almost 14 tons of refuse, according to city statistics.
Last year was the most volunteers and largest amount of trash picked up in the last four.
Once the trash has been collected, it will be taken to the Rockingham County Landfill to be weighed and disposed of.
So far, the event has 12 sponsors, including Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, the Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, Pale Fire Brewing and Matchbox Realty.
Displays from different environmental organizations will be available to view at the Green Scene, the release said, with a chance to also win prizes in the “#BRCD2019 social media competition.”
Registration, lunch and the Green Scene will be held at the Ice House roundabout, 217 S. Liberty St. The Green Scene will be available from 9a.m. to noon.
Sign-in will take place from 9 to 9:30 a.m. with the cleanup going till noon.
