BROADWAY — A new event to benefit Valley Program for Aging Services is kicking off in Broadway on Friday.
Friday Evening in the Park, hosted by the Broadway-Timberville Rotary Club, will take place at Heritage Park in Broadway from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with food trucks, cold beverages, live music and children’s activities.

“It’ll be a relaxing event to benefit the Valley Program for Aging Services in Broadway and Timberville,” said Rotarian Kyle O’Brien, who’s also Broadway’s town manager. “It gives people the opportunity to get outside on a Friday evening.”

VPAS, founded in 1974, serves senior citizens in Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, Staunton, Buena Vista and Lexington, and the counties of Rockingham, Augusta, Rockbridge, Highland and Bath.

The organization provides an array of programs and services, including adult day care, Medicare counseling, transportation, personal care services, health and wellness programs, and Meals on Wheels.

“Our whole focus is to empower people who are 60 and older with resources they need to live engaged lives,” said Beth Bland, director of senior services in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and director of development for VPAS. “There are changes that come along with aging, and we want to help people not only have the services and resources and support they need at more advanced ages, but also help people who are preparing for retirement or early retirement to be proactive with their planning so they can have the highest quality of life.”

Every dollar raised will go directly to the Timberville Broadway Senior Center, which operates under VPAS.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize what Valley Program for Aging Services does in the community,” O’Brien said. “It’s a way to bring awareness to that demographic while raising money for them.”

This will be the first time the Broadway-Timberville Rotary Club and VPAS have partnered for an event.

EZGO Band will perform during the entire event. The cover band plays classic rock and beach music.

Grillizza will be serving pizza along with barbecue food truck Hummingbird Bistro, Domino’s and Lickety Split Ice Cream Truck. Wash all that down with local craft beers, wines and ciders.

Bounce houses, pony rides and crafts will be available for children.

After weeks of heavy rain, the weather forecasts are predicting a beautiful day on Friday, so organizers are anticipating a good turnout.

“It’s a nice kickoff to summer,” O’Brien said. “It looks like the weather is going to be nice.”

Adult admission is $5 and those 18 years and younger are free.
