The annual Deyerle Program Series on Local History returns to Massanutten Regional Library with three events during the month of October. This popular lecture series features local historians, scholars and area experts who explore a broad range of subjects surrounding the history of the Shenandoah Valley. Programs are held on Thursday evenings at 7pm at MRL’s Central Library in downtown Harrisonburg.

October 11 @ 7 PM: “We Honor Those Who Served”
Robin Lyttle of the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project discusses her new book which explores the role of African American soldiers in the Civil War.

October 18 @ 7 PM: “Oh Shenandoah: Paintings of the Historic Valley and River”
Andrei Kushnir is a well-respected plein air artist who paints in a naturalistic realist style. A new exhibit of his work, Oh, Shenandoah: Landscapes of Diversity, will run from December 8, 2018 through September 1, 2019 at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond.

October 25 @ 7 PM: “Ghost Stories of the Valley”
Just in time for Halloween, local storytellers Joan Swift and Susan Clark share eerie tales from around the Shenandoah Valley that are sure to fright and delight.

Now in its 15th year, the Deyerle Program Series on Local History is made possible through the generosity of the Deyerle family, in honor of their parents, Dr. Henry P. and Mary Elizabeth Deyerle. In addition to being respected medical professionals in the local community, the Deyerles were widely known for their passion for collecting American antiques. Their interest in 18th and 19th century domestic artifacts made in the eastern United States was instrumental in raising awareness for the work of the Shenandoah Valley artisans who were active during these centuries. The Deyerles’ collection preserved and highlighted the cultural traditions and artistic achievements from the Shenandoah Valley’s past, and it is this insight into local history that the annual Deyerle Program Series seeks to foster and encourage.

All events hosted by Massanutten Regional Library, including the Deyerle Program Series on Local History, are free and open to the public, and you do not need a library card to attend.
