Massanutten Regional Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program begins its fourth year on Monday, June 4 and runs through August 6. This summer’s theme is “Library Rocks” and events begin on Monday, June 4 at Central Library with a Wii Mario Kart Tournament at 6:30 PM. Preregistration required: http://mrlib.org/mario/.

The Adult Summer Reading Program is open to all area residents eighteen years of age or older. Participants need to register at www.mrlib.org/asrp (or at any MRL branch). Once registered, participants will log into the website each week to record the books they’ve read. Every book read will be an entry into the weekly drawing for prizes. At the end of the summer, a final grand prize will be drawn from all of the books read during the program. A library card is required for registration on the website. New patrons who live or work in Rockingham or Page Counties or the city of Harrisonburg can obtain a free library card at their local branch.

In addition to the weekly prize drawings, MRL will host book groups and movies throughout the summer as part of the Adult Summer Reading Program.

Three special performances are planned:

On Monday, July 2 at 6:30 PM, Central Library will present A Life of Sorrow: The Life & Times of Carter Stanley, a theatrical performance by award winning actor and musician Gary Reid. Based on the life of bluegrass pioneer Carter Stanley (brother of Ralph Stanley), the 70-minute performance touches on Carter’s childhood days on the family farm, the respect he had for old-time musicians that he knew and their influence on him, his jealousies and insecurities, his admiration for Bill Monroe, and the struggles with alcohol that eventually cut short his life at the age of 41 in 1966.

On Saturday, July 14 at 10:30 AM, North River Library (Bridgewater) will host Libraries Rock with The Countryside Garage Band. This program is suitable for the entire family.

On Monday, August 6 at 6:30 PM, Central Library will host JMUkes! Rock the Library, featuring ukulele music for the whole family.

All MRL programs are always free and open to the public; you do not need a library card to attend.
