BROADWAY — Longtime Broadway resident David Jordan was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Broadway Town Council Thursday evening.
Jordan, 59, will finish out Fred Olson’s term, which will end in 2019.
Broadway Mayor Tim Proctor said he has known Jordan for years and is confident that with his outstanding record of achievement, he will bring many new ideas to the table.
Jordan has worked for Tenneco in Harrisonburg for 40 years as the environmental health and safety analyst. He also served on the Rockingham County Parks and Recreation board for eight years, including four years as chairman. His term ended Jan. 1.
He is a current member of the Broadway/Timberville Board of Zoning Appeals, a member of the volunteer Broadway Emergency Squad and is on the Harrisonburg City Public Schools Business Advisory Committee.
“My passion is to help people whether it’s through serving on the Town Council or through the rescue squad,” Jordan said. “The current council has done a great job and I just want to be a part of helping them do what they do every day.”
Jordan said he knows Olson personally and spoke with him before he stepped down in the beginning of August due to health reasons.
Proctor said he was “amazed” at the quality of the 11 people who applied to fill the vacancy on the six- member council. Any one of the candidates, who were interviewed by council Thursday, would have been a good addition to the panel, he said.
“Having so many people interested in being a part of the council is a nice problem to have,” Proctor said.
In the end, he said it was important that council brought in someone who already knew a lot about what was going on in Broadway.
Jordan is expected to be sworn in Tuesday before the council’s next meeting at 7 p.m.
Olson, who served 11 nonconsecutive years on Broadway Town Council, was the sixth elected official to resign in the county this year.
He follows Dayton Councilwomen Shelley Newman and Laura Daily, Elkton Council members Harry Armbruster and Catherine Stewart and Rockingham County Supervisor Fred Eberly.
