Way to Go is a non-profit organization with a mission to empower low-income, working households in Harrisonburg-Rockingham to improve their quality of life by assisting them with their transportation needs. Way to Go understands a lack of reliable, dependable, and safe transportation significantly prohibits community members from maintaining employment, accessing essential community services, and reaching overall well-being. Way to Go provides immediate transportation assistance required to keep low-income workers mobile so that they can remain employed - which is essential in order to attain self-sufficiency and financial independence. We provide a hand-up, not a hand-out. Client services provided by Way to Go include either assistance with maintaining or obtaining a vehicle.
On average, Way to Go transportation services impact over 700 adults and children in Harrisonburg and Rockingham. All clients served fall below 300% of the Federal Poverty level or the ALICE threshold, and are referred to our organization by a social worker/ case manager who is familiar with the client's employment history and financial need.
Transportation services, particularly vehicles, can lead to enhanced economic outcomes for low-income working families, such as:
- ability to get to different types of jobs;
- longer tenure in jobs;
- higher employment rates and shorter unemployment spells;
- increased earnings;
- reduction in absenteeism from work;
- greater access to goods and services needed for a healthy lifestyle; and
